Hyperloop and the environment: what to measure

Calling a system sustainable is not enough. A rigorous comparison considers the full lifecycle: construction, operating energy, maintenance, materials, land use and end of life, always comparing the same transport capacity.

Energy and the electricity mix

Consumption depends on mass, frequency, acceleration, residual pressure, gradient and vehicle occupancy. The environmental result also changes with the electricity mix and should be reported per passenger-kilometre or tonne-kilometre.

Construction and land

An elevated guideway can reduce some crossings but requires foundations, steel, concrete, stations and access roads. Assessment should include construction, biodiversity, material use and the possibility of reusing the corridor.

Indicators to publish

Every study should disclose assumptions, system boundaries, reference year and sources. Without that information, an emissions figure cannot be compared.
