Hyperloop: what it is and how it works
Hyperloop is a guided transport system in which vehicles travel through a reduced-pressure environment. Its performance does not come from one invention: it comes from integrating infrastructure, vehicle, energy, control, stations and safety procedures.
A reduced-pressure tube
Reducing air pressure lowers aerodynamic drag at high speed. The tube is not transparent: it is an opaque industrial structure with joints, seals, access points, services and verifiable evacuation systems.
Levitation, guidance and propulsion
A vehicle may use wheels, air bearings or magnetic levitation during different operating phases. Guidance keeps the vehicle in the correct position, while a linear motor transfers energy along the route. The choices depend on speed, capacity, cost and route conditions.
Safety is a system
Safety is not demonstrated by a prototype’s top speed. It requires hazard analysis, redundancy, leak detection, communications, braking, emergency access and progressive tests on representative infrastructure.
